Abstract We compared water vapor mixing ratios (WVMR) obtained from water vapor Raman lidars (RLs) and local analysis (LA) data to radiosonde observations in Kyushu, Japan, during the rainy season in 2022. Both the RLs and LA captured major WVMR changes that took several hours but only RLs captured local WVMR changes around and below convective mixing layers. Root mean square differences (RMSDs) in WVMR between radiosondes and RLs during nighttime and daytime are less than 0.9 g kg -1 and 1.3 g kg -1. The RMSDs in WVMR between radiosondes and RLs are substantially lower than those between radiosondes and LA during nighttime. However, this distinction is less clear during day- time. The RMSDs of the WVMR between the radiosondes and RLs noticeably decreased when the RL measurement uncertainty threshold values were decreased. The RLs achieved data acquisition rates of 80% at 500 m altitude even when intense moisture fluxes were observed. |
